Free Outdoor Agriculture Festival
9 a.m.-3 p.m. at YMCA Minuke Ole Park, Waimea
The inaugural Taste of the Hawaiian Range Agriculture Festival is 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29 at the YMCA Minuke Ole Park behind Parker Ranch Center in Waimea. Free, the family-friendly event offers ag-themed educational booths and activities for people of all ages.
Children can learn about the various aspects of farm life in the Keiki Farm Hands tent, sponsored by the Hawaii Farm Bureau. Youth can pedal their own kid-sized tractor, use tiny farm tools, plant a seed to take home and grow, plus“milk” a hand-painted replica of a Holstein cow. In addition, there will be a display of live chicks and thriving vegetable plants. Allied Machinery will exhibit a farm tractor.
4-H youth are presenting a livestock exhibit, complete with educational signage, and horseback rides will be available for a nominal fee by members of the Hawaii High School Rodeo Association. Also on tap are 30 educational exhibits—find out how to make a bee hotel and what’s ‘bugging’ your garden. Browse among local product vendors and food trucks.
During the festival, there will be a continuous showing of the movie “Food Evolution” in the exhibit tent, sponsored by Hawaii Farmers & Ranchers United. The film uses the controversy over genetically-modified foods as an example to show how misinformation, confusion and fear can overwhelm objective, evidence-based data.
Attendees can visit the free invasive species exhibit at the adjacent Mana Christian ‘Ohana classroom facility, where there will be free presentations on a host of culinary and agriculture topics. See the Classroom Presentations page for the full schedule of activities. Discover the science, art and practice of producing our local food!
